HeteroGen is a free, online resource for farmers, growers and plant breeders that has been developed specifically for Population crops.

The cultivation and sale of agricultural seed is closely regulated to ensure farmers are able to make their purchase in the knowledge that the crops will perform well and that the seed is free from disease. However, the entire seed certification process in the UK is based upon single varieties where genetic uniformity is the objective.

Population crops are, in contrast, designed to mimic nature’s natural resilience that comes through genetic diversity. This means that the established protocols for certifying seed are not fit for purpose and alternative ways of ensuring the integrity of a seed crop are needed.

The authenticity of the seed is established by its genetic lineage in the same way that pedigree can be guaranteed for animals. â€‹â€‹

Important information is also gathered and shared within the network about how the crops perform across a wide range of practical farming situations. This can provide valuable feedback to plant breeders as well as helping farmers, bakers, millers and maltsters to make informed decisions about their future crop choices.

Data that is collected about yield, quality and disease also helps to build an important body of evidence about the inherent environmental resilience of population crops in relation to their single variety counterparts.
