These are just a few of the ways in which LASNs are supporting the growing interest in Heterogeneous or "Population" crops like Wheat, Barley and Oats

Legislation and Policy

For many growers, the legislation surrounding the growing of seeds that are not on the National Varieties Listing is complex. In particular, seed for Heterogeneous or "Population" types can currently only be traded within the provisions of a Temporary Experiment.

It is important that growers understand how they can become part of that Experiment, and are able to access seed if they wish to become involved.

Supporting plant breeding and crop trials

Local Alternative Seed Networks are able to support a very close and effective relationship between independent plant breeders and those that  grow, mill, bake, brew and ultimately consume the produce. This helps provide valuable feedback about the particular strengths of a Population crop and that helps inform future plant breeding decisions.

Local networks often structure their own farm-based agronomic trials as well as working with bakers and brewers to gather important data about the performance of the crops.

Coordinating seed

availability

The availability of seed is closely coordinated with the market requirements in terms of location and quality.

In order to benefit from the oportunities that are emerging from these markets, we encourage growers to actively engage withtheir local network before atempting to source seed, otherwise they may find that the animal feed market is the only one available to them for their harvested crop. We work with NIAB and APHA to be able to supply Certified seed for growers.
